The Texas Education Agency (TEA) has converted from analog transmission format to digital format. Thus those activities which desire to receive T-Star programming will have to augment their T-Star equipment to include digital capabilities, while retaining the analog capability. Here are the main points: (For details see http://www.t-star.org)
1) The dish and cable will remain the same, but the Low Noise Block amplifiers (LNB) on the dish will have to be changed to "digital-ready" versions. 2) A digital receiver compatible with Digicipher II will have to be added. TEA has specified the General Instruments DSR5200V model receiver. The key point of this selection is that the DSR5200V receiver has facilities for direct connection to the LAN (Ethernet). This offers the potential for video to the desktop, as well as high-speed download capability for software and files. 3) A special potential problem exists for those Districts that received their T-Star systems in Phase I of the program. Some of the dishes provided during this Phase may not be suitable for digital use without modification. Each system will have to be examined in order to determine the extent of the problem. If the installed dish support is a "tripod" instead of a single post there is potentially a problem.
